When David Miller took over as Mayor of Elkhart, IN,
last January, one of the surprises waiting for him was a room next
to his office that was packed with a small mountain of
bankers boxes filled with files left by the prior administration.
"They had no clue what to do until we came in
to try to persuade them to convert all their files to LaserFiche,"
says Jeff Nelson of Elkhart-based Bolt Document Management. "The
previous mayor had been in office for 16 years. It could have been
a gold mine of information or nothing but junk. But there'd be no
way of knowing without going through every item."
Within days, Nelson presented the Mayor with a LaserFiche
Plus CD containing 10,000 pages of OCRed and indexed ../images of
the files that had been in the room. They ranged from brochures, newspaper
and magazine clippings, and letters to business cards, proposals and
handwritten notes. "We turned a pile that
would have had no real value to anyone into a compact resource for
anyone wanting insight into that fairly lengthy period of time."
Moreover,
Mayor Miller now has rescued a valuable new work area for his office
suite. Hopefully, Nelson will soon convince the
Mayor that the room would be perfect for housing a LaserFiche document
imaging center. Judging from Nelson's recent
success in local government circles, it's a good bet to happen at
some point in the not too distant future.
